After taking an extensive amount of photographs as a travel consultant during my journeys through Africa, I realised that all I wanted to do is create images.
At the age of thirty-five I decided to change my life around and study Photographic Design at the Fotovakschool in my hometown Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
I graduated cum laude with my first ever documentary project Gisel.
I could have never imagined that I would become a portrait- and documentary photographer. Yet, if you would ask me now, I could not imagine doing anything else with my life.
I think the strongest asset of my work is my ability to obtain a real connection with the people I photograph. Due to my own experiences with addiction, personality disorders and depression, I am not afraid to approach my subjects with my own vulnerability, openness and honesty. This asset gives me the opportunity to get close to the person I am documenting.
I find true beauty in disformaties, death, sex and decay. Troubled individuals trigger my photographic curiosity. I think it is amazing to let the viewer of my work experience the feeling of connecting with the photographed. Giving them the opportunity to take a peek into the lives of people they would probably normally not cross paths with in their daily lives.
